Ankle deformities can be painful and cause various mobility issues, often making it difficult to walk or stand. They can be the result of factors such as a traumatic injury or arthritis. At SOFLLEX, we can treat an ankle deformity to help you regain mobility and reduce pain.

What is an Ankle Deformity?

An ankle deformity is a condition that involves the ankle being positioned incorrectly. There are many types of ankle deformities, but here are a few of the more common conditions we treat:

Talolisthesis is usually associated with end-stage ankle arthritis and involves the talus bone, or ankle bone, being translated backward or forward relative to the leg’s axis. Essentially, the bone is located in a position that is closer to the midfoot or back of the heel than it should be.

Valgus Ankle

A valgus ankle is where the ankle is positioned so that the foot is turned sideways, away from the other foot. So, if you have the condition on your right foot, it would be pointing outward to the right.

Varus Ankle

A varus ankle is the opposite of a valgus ankle. If you have this ankle deformity, the foot is turned toward the other foot. So, if your right foot is affected, it will point inward to the left.

Symptoms of Ankle Deformities

  • Pain
  • Unable to properly walk or stand
  • Foot is turned in an abnormal way

Treatment for Ankle Deformities

While we will consider nonsurgical treatment, the likely scenario is that we will need to perform a procedure, whether it be minimally invasive surgery or more complex treatment. Each ankle injury is different, and we examine your unique injury to decide the best course of action. If you have any concerns about your procedure, we are here to answer your questions.
