Charcot Reconstruction
Contact UsOften, one noticeable moment can be the cause of your foot pain and discomfort. That is not necessarily the case with Charcot foot, in which several microtraumas can lead to this progressive condition. At SOFLLEX, our doctors can diagnose and treat your foot injuries so you can return to your daily activities without the pain.
What is Charcot Foot?
Charcot foot is the weakening of soft tissues, bones, and joints over an extended period caused by nerve damage. Since the neuropathy will leave you oblivious to the extent of your injuries, you can unknowingly make the problem worse through the continued use of the injured foot. The condition can lead to numerous issues, including an abnormally shaped foot, collapsed joints, infection, and ulcers.
Symptoms of Charcot Foot

- Swelling
- Redness
- ur foot is much warmer than the other
Without proper care, Charcot foot can lead to the need for amputation, so it’s important to see a doctor if you believe you are experiencing any symptoms. For diagnosis, we will complete X-rays or a CAT scan before discussing treatment options.
What is Charcot Reconstruction?
Before turning to Charcot reconstruction, we might first recommend nonsurgical treatment. The most important thing you can do is keeping weight off the foot until the doctor instructs you that it’s safe. Any continued use of your foot can lead to serious complications, so you will often need a wheelchair or crutches for mobility.
Depending on the severity, we might fit you with a cast, boot, or custom shoes. However, sometimes surgery in the form of Charcot reconstruction is necessary. There are two main options: realignment osteotomy and fusion and an ostectomy. An ostectomy is performed to remove the bony prominence, while a realignment osteotomy and fusion is used to correct the foot deformity.
